The ETRADE Trading Journal
Published on · Updated on

E*TRADE has been around long enough to have serious traders with years of history sitting in their accounts - stocks, options, dividends, all stacked up in transaction logs that are useful for tax time but not much else.

The problem isn't that the data doesn't exist. It's that E*TRADE's native tools can't tell you whether your covered calls are outperforming your long equity positions, which expiration windows work best for your options strategy, or how your win rate changes depending on how long you held a position. That kind of analysis requires a dedicated trading journal.

TraderInsight.pro is built specifically for this. Import your E*TRADE CSV, and within minutes you can start building performance reports that actually match how you think about your trading - filtered by strategy, by asset class, by time period, or all three at once.

What E*TRADE Doesn't Show You

E*TRADE's performance reporting defaults to a portfolio view: total return, holdings, value over time. It's investor-centric. If you're an active trader - running options strategies, sizing in and out of positions, testing setups across different market conditions - what you actually need to know is:

  • Which of your strategies produces the best risk/reward over time?
  • Are you better in the morning or the afternoon?
  • Do you exit too early, or hold losers too long?

None of that is answerable from E*TRADE's interface. A dedicated options trading journal tracks all of it - and with TraderInsight.pro's AI chat, you can ask those questions in plain English and get answers from your actual data instantly.

How to Export Your Trade History from E*TRADE

Step 1: Log in and go to Transactions

Go to etrade.com and log in. Click the Accounts tab, then select Transactions (or Transaction History) from the dropdown.

Step 2: Select account and date range

Use the account selector if you have multiple accounts. Set a Custom date range in the Time Period filter and click Search to load the relevant transactions.

Tip: If you want to include option exercises and expirations, make sure no transaction type filters are applied - "All Transaction Types" should be selected.

Step 3: Download as CSV

Click the Download icon in the top-right corner of the transaction table. Select Spreadsheet Format (Microsoft Excel) or CSV from the format options, then confirm the download. The file saves as DownloadTxnHistory.csv.

Importing into TraderInsight.pro

  1. Open the Import page.
  2. Drag your CSV onto the import area - or click to browse to it.
  3. Done

Stocks, options, dividends, etc. will all be parsed automatically.

Making the Most of Your Data

Once your E*TRADE history is in TraderInsight.pro, the analysis work begins. A few places to start:

  • If you trade options, the options trading journal view gives you a breakdown of performance by strategy type, expiration, and underlying.
  • Use tags to annotate your trades with setup names, mistakes, or market conditions. Once tagged, you can run reports filtered to only those labels.
  • The comparison report is especially useful if you run multiple strategies - stack them side by side and see which one actually earns its risk.
  • Write post-trade notes directly tied to individual positions. Over time, this becomes a searchable record of your own decision-making evolution.
